Washington Redskins performance report – NFL Special Part 1
Washington Redskins went through ups and downs till their bye week, but things miraculously changes for them after the bye as they have won five straight games after that, and are currently tied atop National Football Conference (NFC)
East with Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.
In this special report, we will review the problems Redskins faced in first half of the season and progression which followed them after Week 10.
Overall, the offence played a key role in the team’s surge that has brightened their playoff hopes. Let’s take a look at their performance in every game.
Week 1: New Orleans saints
Quarterback Robert Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris made their debut by a 40-32 win over New Orleans Saints.
Redskins led the game from the start. In the first quarter, receiver Pierre Garcon caught an 88-yard pass from Griffin and scored a touchdown.
Second-year Pro receiver Aldrick Robinson caught 5-yard pass from Griffin and scored touchdown in his debut game.
Griffin became troublesome for Saints’ defence by passing 320 yards and became the first rookie to throw more than 300 yards in a season opener win.
He scored two touchdowns and his passer rating was 139.9 with 73.1 completion percentage.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes in the final quarter but it was too late, they did not have more time to increase their score.
Week 2: St. Louis Rams
During the first quarter of a 28-31 lost against St. Louis Rams, Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo got injured.
Until the end of the third quarter Redskins remained dominant with 28-23, but Rams’ strong defence did not let them reach the zone till the end.
RG3 was sacked once and he completed 20 of 29 passes for 206 yards with one rushing touchdown and an interception. He also threw a touchdown pass to Hankerson in second quarter.
The passing game struggled, as Garcon stayed out of the field due to his injury. Receiver Santana Moss and Leonard Hankerson caught three and two passes respectively.
Week 3: Cincinnati Bengals
It was Redskins’ second consecutive loss as Cincinnati Bengals defeated them by 38-31.
Griffin threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Moss at the end of third quarter to level the score at 24-24. He completed 21 of 34 passes for 221 yards.
He also rushed for 74 yards and scored a touchdown.
Redskins’ defence completely failed to perform, as they let Bengals to pass 73 and 59 yards in first and fourth quarters respectively.
Week 4: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Redskins’ offence performed well and defeated Buccaneers by 24-22 on road.
Griffin passed 323 yards against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the most in his career. He fumbled during one play but the ball was recovered by Garcon, who had returned after missing two games.
The Former Heisman Trophy winner rushed for 5 yards and scored a touchdown. He was sacked once and had 74.3 completion percentage.
Morris also played well and rushed for 113 yards, scoring a touchdown while rushing for 39 yards in the second quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Buccaneers increased their points to 22-21 after scoring a touchdown and a field goal. In dying moments of the game, Redskins’ Billy Cundiff rushed for 41 yards to score the winning touchdown.
After four games, Redskins got a 2-2 record. It seemed like it was only Griffin who was making efforts for wins.
