Washington Redskins performance report – NFL Special part 2
In second part of this report, we will review Washington Redskins' performance from Week 5 to Week 9 of the 2012 season.
In previous part, we evaluated Redskins’ first four games of the season in which they ended up with 2-2 record.
They struggled and lost close games, and did not seem like quitting at any stage.
Week 5: Atlanta Falcons
Redskins were defeated by Atlanta Falcons at home. Early in the second half, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was knocked out of the game, when Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon hit him on his helmet.
Griffin got concussed due to this hit. Rookie backup quarterback Kirk Cousins replaced Griffin, and threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to receiver Santana Moss in the fourth quarter.
Redskins had better running plays than Falcons, but still it was not their day to stand in front of one of the best teams of the National Football League (NFL).
Week 6: Minnesota Vikings
Redskins hosted Minnesota Vikings and managed to win third game of the season by 38-26. Everyone was expecting that Griffin was going to miss this game due to concussion he suffered in Week 5.
It happened after a long time in the NFL that a quarterback rushed for 138 yards and scored two touchdowns. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 182 yards and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to fullback Darrel Young.
Griffin seemed quite good as he rushed towards the end zone for 76 yards at the end of the game.
Week 7: New York Giants
Redskins were beaten 23-27 by their National Football Conference (NFC) East rivals New York Giants, who were leading the division with 4-2.
Redskins lost their lead in the fourth quarter. Griffin was intercepted once and completed 20 of 28 passes for 258 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Rookie running back Alfred Morris also performed well, he rushed 22 times for 120 yards.
The defence faced hurdles when they could not restrict opposing offence to score points. Their tight end Fred Davis and linebacker London Fletcher got injured during the game.
With a torn Achilles, Davis ended up his season with this game.
Week 8: Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers strong defence kept Redskins from scoring. Redskins offence was thrashed by Steelers, who easily won the game 27-12.
Griffin could not even perform well in the game. He completed 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and helped Moss to score only one touchdown for the team, by passing him 2-yard pass in the second quarter.
Steelers did not receive much trouble from Redskins’ defence and scored in better way.
Week 9: Carolina Panthers
It was third consecutive loss for Redskins, and Carolina Panthers broke their five-game losing streak with this 21-13 win on road.
Griffin performed well, and completed 23 of 39 passes for 215 yards and rushed 11 times for 53 yards, but could not score any touchdown. He was sacked four times.
Moss, who had been good at receiving RG3’s passes in last few games, got concussed and left the game. Redskins offence failed to make some good points for the team.
The only touchdown scored by Redskins was at the end of the game, when running back Evan Royster ran for 2 yards.
The Redskins were standing at 3-6 after Week 9.
