Washington Redskins release quarterback John Beck after drafting two quarterbacks – NFL News
Even before the start of 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, it was anticipated that Washington Redskins will select quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), through their second overall pick. Redskins already had John Beck and Rex Grossman serving
at quarterback positions and RG3’s arrival increased the competition.
However, Redskins surprisingly drafted one more quarterback Kirk Cousins in fourth round of the squad, adding fuel to the speculations that Grossman or Beck could be sent packing.
As expected, the Redskins recently announced that they have released Beck, who has become a free agent now and eligible to join any other team.
Beck started his professional NFL career in 2007 with Miami Dolphins. He signed a four-year rookie contract with the Dolphins and became their third-string quarterback.
In his rookie season, he got an opportunity to play five games, but he was unimpressive and could not lead his team to any victory. He finished the season with completing 60 of his 107 attempted passes for 559 yards and threw one touchdown-pass and three
interceptions.
Beck did not start any game in the next season after which he was eventually released.
After being released by Dolphins, Beck joined Baltimore Ravens in 2009. He did not play any game in his first season with Ravens. Before the start of the next season, Ravens re-signed him, but later traded the player to Redskins.
In 2010 season, Beck did not get any playing time with Redskins. In the last season, however, he made three starts while playing four games in which he completed a total of 80 passes of 132 attempts for 858 yards. He threw two touchdown-passes and four interceptions
and received a quarterback rating of 72.1.
He was replaced by Grossman as Redskins’ starter halfway through the season.
Following the team’s disastrous performance in the season, it was expected that there would be some drastic changes in the team’s roster and Beck’s release is one of them.
Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, while talking to media, said of Beck’s release:
“I thought we owed it to John to let him go out and find a team right away."
Even though another experienced player in the form of Grossman is available for Redskins, they are expected to start the next season with RG3 with Grossman and Cousins serving as his backup.
