Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III to practise on Wednesday – NFL News
Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3), who was forced out of Week 5 game against Atlanta Falcons after suffering a mild concussion, has been cleared for Wednesday‘s practice without contact, The Washington Post has reported.
However, there is no official confirmation of this report and the rookie’s status for Week 6 game against Minnesota Vikings in still unclear, as per the team’s version.
RG3 has been impressive so far, though his team has not been able to win plenty of games. However, there is no denying that there is a lot of potential in the player.
That being said, it should also be noted that the quarterback still needs to learn a lot. In general, quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL) focus more on throwing the ball rather than running with it.
However, rookies tend to rely more on their rushing skills rather than passing the ball and that is where they become prone to severe hits.
The same happened with RG3, who, according to Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, must pass the ball more often than running with it.
Shanahan told Albert Breer of the NFL Network and NFL.com:
"What we have to teach him (RG3) is you don't have to run, sometimes it's better if the other guy does. And if they take away both, it's 'When do you slide?' When he was in college, he was so fast, that chances are if he gets in the open field, he's gone. Here, sometimes, it needs to be 10 to 12 yards, and then slide, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just learning to slide."
Although it is not confirmed by the team that RG3 is going to practise on Wednesday, even if he does, it will not be taken as a guarantee that he will participate in Week 6 game.
Injuries like concussion are not easily treated and can reoccur anytime. Shanahan has confirmed that RG3 has not yet faced any setbacks, but the coach has maintained that the quarterback will be monitored on daily basis.
According to the NFL rules, RG3 is subjected to get clearance from the team doctors and an independent neurologist before taking the field again.
