Washington Redskins' running back Clinton Portis hopeful to play this Sunday
After being embarrassed by Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night in a 59-28 blow-out loss, the Washington Redskins could use all the help they can get, and Clinton Portis may be ready
to provide that help.
Portis tore a groin muscle in a 17-12 win against the Eagles on 3 October, and has missed the past seven weeks recovering from the injury. Tuesday 17 November he said there was a 50-50 chance that he could
return to the field this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
"That's what I'm aiming toward," Portis said on his weekly radio show. "But it's gonna be the same going through the week and showing an improvement from the beginning of the week to the end. And that'll
be able to go get back on the field. I just got to be safe."
Portis practiced last week, but after experiencing pain and swelling in the injured muscle, he did not play on Monday night.
Should he return to action on Sunday it will be a big boost for a team that needs to rebound after a devastating loss. Portis’ return will help a rushing offence that’s ranked 22nd in the league.
In four games this season, Portis has rushed for 195 yards on 49 carries with two touchdowns. He’s also caught four balls for 41 yards.
Portis has been with the Redskins since 2004. Over his career, he’s amassed 9891 yards on 2225 carries, and he has 75 touchdowns. He’s 25th in all-time rushing yards in the NFL.
The Redskins are 4-5 on the season, and trail the Eagles and New York Giants who have identical 6-3 records in the NFC East. If Washington has any hopes of making the playoffs they’ll need a healthy Portis,
who will not only improve the running game when he returns, but he should also take some of the pressure off quarterback Donovan McNabb and the passing game.
