Washington Redskins to pick Robert Griffin III in draft, player slightly relieved to know about future
Now that Baylor’s Robert Griffin III (RG3) is an apparent choice for Washington Redskins for the National Football League (NFL) 2012 draft, the player is slightly relieved to know about his future. However, he has also admitted to be less excited on the draft day as he already knows which team is going to pick him.
A day earlier, the Indianapolis Colts, who own the first overall pick, confirmed that they would select Stanford’s Andrew Luck, leaving RG3 for the Redskins, who have the second overall pick.
RG3 said of Colts’ decision and his own future:
“It’s less stressful, because I already know where I’m going, and know where I’m going to call home. I’d rather know where I’m going than have to be very stressed about where I have to go. But it does kind of rob me of that true draftee experience. But I’ve never done anything normal in my life.”
Since last year, Luck had been projected to be the number one pick in the 2012 draft, but RG3 emerged nearly out of nowhere to steal the show recently.
RG3 gave a tough competition to Luck and both players and several other commentators acknowledged that anyone of them could be the first pick.
However, Colts have made up their mind now and it has been official that Luck will be the first pick.
It also means that Redskins will select RG3, who also paid a visit to Washington and met the team’s coaching staff earlier this month.
That being said, it should also be noted that Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, recently said that there was no hundred percent surety that Redskins would draft RG3.
However, the head coach joked and said he is 99.9 percent sure about drafting RG3. While talking to reports during his pre-draft press conference, Shanahan said:
"Nothing's a 100 percent yet, so I've got to say 99.9 (percent).”
He joked with reporters and said:
"If you guys are right, we're taking RG3."
All the developments surrounding the draft suggest that RG3 is heading to Washington to pursue his professional career. Even RG3 is confident about this fact as he also stated a day earlier that he would have to beat out Redskins’ quarterback, Rex Grossman, to prove his worth.
