Washington Redskins to use Lorenzo Alexander as a backup for various defensive positions – NFL News
Lorenzo Alexander is perhaps one of the best players in the league as far as versatility is concerned. He has played in both offensive and defensive positions as well as in the special teams for Washington Redskins.
When it comes to defensive line, Alexander has played as defensive tackle, fullback, defensive end, as well as outside linebacker.
Head coach Mike Shanahan has been emphasising on roster versatility this season, and to increase the roster depth he has been switching players from their default position.
Alexander said of the shift:
"I’ve been through this before. Once we get to the season, [the coaches] will throw me in there for one or two reps in practice, because they know I can do it."
Alexander has been in special teams since the 2010 season. He is a type of player coaches always want in their team. He is a one-man gang for the team.
He has the temperament to play in whatever position the coach wants as he is the ultimate utility.
In order to make himself a regular in defence, Alexander has to grind his defensive skill. For this purpose, Alexander is utilising the experience of his fellow player and friend London Fletcher.
Veteran Fletcher has played a staggering 14 seasons in the league. This shows the calibre and consistency of the player who is a defensive power house. According to Alexander:
"Defense is my side of the ball, so I pay a lot of attention as far as film work. All I have to do is watch film of London Fletcher to learn my role, because we've got the best in the league playing inside."
Alexander has played six seasons in the league. Last season, he captained the special teams and played 15 games while recording 15 tackles.
Getting transferred to special teams does fit well, especially with a multi-talented player like Alexander. Alexander said:
"Coach Shanahan hasn’t really defined how they’re going to be using me. Obviously, when you want to be a starter, you better flash on special teams.”
Although Alexander feels more at home at linebacker, he admits that his play time is more situational based.
He realises the fact that he will get a chance only in case of emergency. Whatever be the case, Alexander is preparing to give his best.
It is up to the coach to decide whether Alexander has the capability to play as a regular in either defensive or offensive team.
