Washington Wizard rookie Jan Vesely still undecided on future – NBA Update
Jan Vesely’s agent has revealed that the player has not yet made up his mind over where he will play next season. Vesely has options in the Europe, but will reportedly not commit until the NBA labour situation is clear. If the
lockout shows no signs of resolving by the end of August though, Vesely’s hand could be forced.
Jan Vesely hails from the Czech Republic and was drafted as the sixth overall pick back in June by the Washington Wizards. He stands 6-foot-11 and plays forward. His exceptional athleticism and scoring ability set him apart early
in his career and once the player became available for the NBA draft a number of teams started hovering around him.
In the NBA Draft 2011, the Washington Wizards landed the versatile big man with the sixth pick. Wizards’ fans have been l*****g their hands in anticipation at the prospect of Vesely joining up with a team that already has shown
plenty of potential. Combining the forward with Washington Wizards excellent point guard and former first overall draft pick John Wall, is something the management has been looking forward.
However their plans have been put in limbo because of the NBA lockout. The National Basketball Players Association and NBA Commissioner David Stern do not look likely to resolve the situation in the near future with some analysts
also suggesting that the NBA season could be lost.
Vesely cannot sign a contract with the Wizards until the NBA lockout is over because the Wizards cannot have contact with him. That means he cannot be briefed about the situation either. In the meanwhile, the European seasons are
also drawing nearer and Vesely is stuck in the middle without a clear direction to follow.
If he signs a contract and decides to play in Europe and the NBA lockout ends afterwards, he would lose an NBA season. If he doesn’t sign for a European team and waits on the NBA, he risks sitting at home for a year.
The player’s agent, Alexander Raskovic, revealed that he will wait until the end of August to make a decision,
“We are looking for the developing of the lock out situation, and by the end of the August we will make decision where he will play in Europe, or no,” Raskovic said on Monday. “Jan may wait for the end of lockout with no playing
in any of the team[s] in Europe.”
It represents a substantial risk for Jan Vesely who has been out of action for a while now. He was involved in the NBA draft and also turned down the opportunity to represent his country in some friendly matches. The Czech Republic
didn’t qualify for the EuroBasket tournament so Vesely cannot look forward to getting some game time there as some other European players can.
