Washington Wizards: A young team looking make it big next season: NBA Update
The Washington Wizards finished 13th overall in the Eastern Conference, but late in the regular season, they played some impressive basketball. They won five out of last eight games and ended the 2010-2011 regular season on a high note. The Wizards showed a very good team effort against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats, Detroit Pistons and then finally against the Boston Celtics.
Although their performance was good as they only picked the pace late in the season. This time though, the expectations are higher.
The league has locked its players over labour dispute with the players association which is proving very fruitful for the Wizards in a certain way. No one knows as how long this lockout will prevail in the National Basketball Association (NBA) which automatically gives additional time to the Wizards to plan and prepare for the future. Their management will especially benefit from the added time and they can expedite their free agency options in detail in a bid to make their roster stronger for upcoming season.
Overall the Wizards defense was impressive last season, but they need to improve upon their offensive ball play to excel in the league. They need some experience players into their roster. The Wizards are already playing with a young team and need some more players who will provide them with good experience. At present, hardly three players have more than seven years of experience.
Rashard Lewis is the only player in the Wizards who has spent 13 years in the league. He averaged 11.7 points, 5.10 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game during 2010-2011 season. Though the Wizards have a good forward, but to move up in the league, they need to include a good centre in their roster.
This years’ free agency also allows the Wizards to make some quick changes and provide a better chance to their franchise to make a good impression next season. They need to pursue some quality and war hardened players.
Tyson Chandler would be a very good option for the Wizards. The big centre gave a huge boost to the Dallas Mavericks last season, especially in finals where he helped his team to win the NBA Championship. He is an unrestricted free agent this year and the Wizards should pursue him for their best interest.
Overall the Wizards need to work hard and keep faith in their young players like John Wall. Eventually these young players will groom with time and help the Washington Wizards become a force in near future.
