Washington Wizards and the next NBA season – NBA Feature
After a lacklustre regular season, finishing with the second worst record in the league, the Washington Wizards are in the phase of rebuilding at the moment, one in which they have been in, for quite some time now. The only highlight for them in the regular season came in the closing stages when they finished off with a six game winning streak.
When the Wizards drafted John Wall as the number 1 pick two seasons ago, the Wizards would have hoped to be a playoff contender by now, however with 2 years gone and Wall still learning the traits of the NBA, they don’t have chance in the immediate future.
The main reason for the poor results has been the fact that in the past two years, with the exception of only a few players, the entire Wizard roster has seen a complete turnaround. The changes have been so constant that the Wizards players including Wall have not been able to find the right chemistry.
Another thing that has been working against the Wizards is that John Wall is the best they have got. He has been given the opportunity to lead a team with only 2 years of experience. Coming out of a basketball factory, the Kentucky Wildcats, John can be a leader for the team with his excellent passing and high level of basketball IQ he has at his disposal.
However he is surrounded by inexperienced players at the moment and the only player who looked to be blessed with the same level of basketball IQ, JaVale McGee was traded to the Denver Nuggets. So what the Wizards need to do is give Wall a chance by providing him with better team mates who can help and in return get helped by his talents.
In order to make progress towards the future, they would have to make some more big yet sensible changes to the roster this time around to be able to just even get in contention of being a playoff bound team. One key change they would want to bring is release players like Andray Blatche who are nowhere near fit to be playing with the young roster of the Wizards.
Other changes that the Wizards can bring to their team are if they choose to bring in a better second guard who has the experience of playing in the NBA. The main thing that would bring to this young Wizards unit is that if they bring in an experienced guard it would bring the much required depth and the help out Wall with the responsibility of handling the ball while giving him some much needed rest during games. The best possible option in that regard for them would be to let go of Rashard Lewis and Shelvin Mack and bring in a type of player like O.J. Mayo or choose to go with the experienced Chauncey Billups.
The luck has been in the Wizards favour recently as they closed out the regular season in some form, they also had Jan Vesely and Kevin Seraphin, settle in well with the team. They also secured the number three draft after the lottery. The best option at the moment for the Wizards would be to make the most of their pick and hope to draft Thomas Robinson of the Kansas Jayhawks who can bring the much require post presence to this Washington franchise.
