Wasim Akram: Senior players will not be happy with Virat Kohli’s appointment as vice-captain – Cricket News Update
Legendary cricketer from Pakistan, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028’s second in command may not sit well with certain senior players in the Indian team.
The former skipper of Pakistan thinks that the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 will not be happy by this decision of the BCCI, as they were hoping to take the captaincy when Dhoni steps down, but now it seems as if Kohli will be the one, who will get the role.
Akram – who led http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 to the 1999 World Cup finals - believes that Kohli’s appoint as Dhoni’s deputy is a precautionary step by the selectors, who would like to develop the team for the 2015 World Cup and the 23-year-old may be the best option at their disposal, if Dhoni is not part of team.
He said, “I feel senior players like Sehwag and Gambhir will not be happy with this. Kohli has showed his true potential on this Australian tour and emerged as a candidate for vice-captaincy.”
Akram continued, “The Indian selectors are probably thinking about the 2015 World Cup and if Dhoni is unfit before that, Kohli would be the right man to replace him.”
Kohli has been in supreme form with the bat on the tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. However, the same cannot be said about the other Indian batsmen, many of whom have been short on runs throughout the tour.
The likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, Sehwag and Raina have all been below par in the series. Sehwag in particular has been a big disappointment; the belligerent batsman has scored only 65 runs from five innings at an average of 13.
Sehwag was not picked for the Asia Cup on account of injury concerns, but many critics believe that the selectors dropped him as he was not scoring runs.
Akram states that the selectors should have the guts to admit that they have dropped Sehwag. He said, “Maybe the Indian selectors are not bold enough to drop a player like Sehwag. The concept of 'resting' an out-of-form player never made sense to me and it baffles me again. A player plays or he is dropped, it's simple.”
