Wasn't Bush Governor in Texas in the 1990's? Why didn't he grant a retrial during that time?

Why is he NOW wanting to side with the illegal aliens and Mexico along with the "World Court?"

A Harris County state district court has already set an execution date for one of the men: José Ernesto Medellín, a 33-year-old Houston gang member convicted in 1994 for the murders of two teenage girls.

The Hidalgo County convicts are:

>> Roberto Moreno Ramos, now 53, who confessed to clubbing his wife and two children over the head with a hammer before burying them under the floor of their Progreso home.

>> Rubén Ramírez Cárdenas, now 37, who sneaked into an Edinburg teenager's home in 1997 and bound, kidnapped and raped her before dumping her body in a nearby canal.

  1. 1.  A governor does not have the power to "grant a retrial".  That's up to a court.

    2.  We signed a treaty promising to notify foreign consulates when their nationals are put on trial.  We signed the treaty so that we would get the benefit of it in other countries.  According to the Constitution (Article VI), treaties are the "law of the land".  Bush is trying to make Texas obey the law.

If we don't keep the promises we make in treaties, our word will be c**p in the world forum, and we will not get the benefits we want from the treaties.

Your prejudice is showing!  There is nothing in the article to indicate that the murderers are *illegal* aliens.  There are thousands of legal Mexican aliens in Texas.  Actually, Texas was a part of Mexico until Americans started a war and took it from Mexico in 1836.  In 1846-48 the US invaded Mexico and occupied thousands of square miles of Mexican territory, which later became the states of California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.

Please don't put me in the position of having to defend Bush again.

    Addition:

If you are researching cases of illegal aliens, why did you ask this question about this case, which may not involve them?  And I answered your basic question right off.

  2. He wasn't governor in 2003.  That's when the International Court got involved.

Maybe you should try reading your own source before railing about Bush.

  3. Plain and simple, Bush like 'some', Texas Governors have played Politics when it came to the Death Penalties.

Due to the 'extreme' circumstances of murder in Texas and some other Mexican border states since the 80's, the death penalty is the maximum recourse.

However, that same death penalty is abused. The death penalty has been applied across the board on all races and it just seems harder due to cases such as the ones you indicate due to the fact that Mexico does not have the death penalty, only life prison terms.

On the other hand, it is the way, including one of this sentences was applied. All though it merits the death penalty, it is the way it was presented, http://crime.about.com/od/death/a/mitiga...

no excuse is been made, however, other races have been affected by the presentation w/o juries given second thought or questioning the prosecution w/ regards to the purpose or risk contempt of court or a hung jury and in instances mistrial, http://crime.about.com/od/death/a/irreve...

Rather a touchy subject, just depends what side of the death penalty your on.

Mexican Congress considered the Death Penalty several years ago and won approval from the citizen, yet died somewhere along the walk.. US support was involved yet, extradiction for show and tell was preferred.... by both nations... provided nothing harsher then life was given... agreed and signed - hypocracy(democracy) - at work - sorry - typo

  4. You know - if you had bothered to read your own reference you would not be looking like an idiot right now.

  5. "This court ruling does not change anything," said Allison Castle, a spokeswoman in Gov. Rick Perry's office. "Those who come to Texas and commit crimes will have to pay the consequences."
