  1. The problem is setting the poll tax (Community Charge) was that every one would have to contribute to it. A minority of hooligans who lived permanently off state benefits and contributed absolutely nothing objected and ably supported by their socialist friends at all levels of government, organised riots to bring the system down.

Their were flaws in ensuring that exemptions should be granted, and if that had been properly been looked into, it could have been a much fairer system than what we have today. A pensioner just over the no benefits limits pays the same amount as 4 high earners living in the same band of house.

I know a Chairman of a school governing body who was sacked by a socialist dominated governing body because she tried to insist that the headmistress discipline on of her teacher who was caught on TV playing a prominent part in one of the riots during school hours after she had rung in to say that she was sick.

Such was the level of vengeance used.

  2. I thought it was Chris Patten, who later went on to be Hong Kong's last governor, who was responsible for implementing it.

He did have some lovely daughters...

  3. don;t know but be interesting to find out, she got the blame though who ever thought it up.

it was first rolled out in Scotland apparently and it wasn't thousands who refused to pay it, it was millions, that was why it was scrapped.
