I have a nest right under my front door. The council charge £60 to destroy it, but is it safe to spray it myself with and how do I go about it?

  1. I don't know what you can find there (you might have different regulations for pesticides), but in the USA we can get canisters of wasp spray.  They're a pesticide that's designed to spray a greater distance, so you can be farther away from the nest when you treat it.  The best thing to do is to wait for dusk because they'll return to the nest and their activity level will be much lower, so you'll be less likely to be stung.  Make sure you coat the nest well, and then leave it alone overnight.  I've done this without getting stung, but if you're at all allergic to stings then I'd say it's worth the amount the council is charging, even though that sounds like a LOT.

  2. Smoke will get rid of them. Light an oily rag and let the smoke penetrate the nest.

  3. in addition to these answers i have ben told a lit candle placed just under the entrance hole will 'burn' the wings off the wasps when the return at dusk.

I got rid of one nest in my loft by spraying with wasp killer powder liberally and leaving it overnight. next day i vacuumed it and all the dead wasp up. I didn't get stung once ( fortunately) but I also made sure i got all the entrances sprayed into the loft space too.

  4. Please, don`t go near it.Let the experts take care of it.

  5. I would just spray the c**p out of it with raid wasp killer.

I use a different product but it is not available to the public.

  6. Go out at night when they aren't active and spray the nest with car anti freeze from an ordinary kitchen detergent or insect gun.

The nest turns to black sludge if you get enough on it. Shovel it into a bin bag when it drops tie the top and bin it.

More difficult with a hanging nest, but if you can deliver ant powder to the entrance holes that will kill them in a day, (that's all that's in the council mans back pack).

I've killed a hanging nest with anti freeze and quite a few underground nests with ant powder. I'm guessing any petrol based liquid will dissolve the nest, anti freeze just happened to be in the garage, but it worked.

  7. It is never 100% safe to take on a wasps nest, however as the other answers say wait for dusk when the wasps are quite. then use a wasp destroying powder. Puff the powder on the nest around the entrance and retreat quickly. This will kill the wasps, any leaving or returning to the nest will coat themselves with powder and die. When all activity has stopped around the nest, fit the extension to your vacuum cleaner and suck up the nest. Check in a day or two if the nest is busy again re-apply powder etc   it worked for me ------ good luck
