I have a 4-plug extension cable plugged in and is always on, although i unplug anything that is plugged into it when i go out and at night.

Does it waste electricity when left on? (Reason its left on is that the plug is located behind wardrobe so would have to move and switch off all the time)

  1. Using an extension cord its self can waste energy.  Further the electricity travels the more is lost.  On Items that don't draw much power it may not be as notice able as items that draw more power.  This is easy to test.  If you have a high draw item such as a window ac plug it straight into the wall and than use an extension cord.  You will be able to tell the difference.  The longer and thinner the cord is the more you will notice.  As far as leaving it plugged in and not using it I wouldn't think so.

  2. No, because electricity requires the circuit to be completed before any "waste" or usage occurs.  Unplugging the appliance from the lead is the same as turning off the switch at the wall socket (power point).  If your lead has an LED (light emitting diode) in the plug or socket end to indicate it is live, then a miniscule amount of power will be used.  There is a safety consideration to leaving a live socket end of the lead lying on the floor, particularly if you have small children.

  3. For your convenience why don't you replace it with a powerstrip that has a switch on it, that way you can leave everything plugged in and just flip the switch to stop all energy usage.
