  1. reduce, reuse, recycle

  2. Worm farms!

    Very cyclic in nature (a great thing) - food scraps go in, great fertiliser comes out.

    And it makes you feel like there are thousands of good guys in your home!

  3. What landfill problem? We have plenty of landfill space.

    Burning for energy recovery is a good thing. It replaces fossil fuels as an energy source. (And saves landfill space.)

    The only real answer is to make less waste. Most of what we throw out is packaging. We need to start there.

  4. mjm, in case you didn't notice, this is the u.k. board, we DO NOT have plenty of space!

    reduce packaging and turnover of goods (do you really need that? what's wrong with the old one?).

    reduce waste. u.k. households waste 1/3 of the food they buy.  some kids throw nearly new clothes away - that's obscene!

    reuse old stuff; sell on ebay, use freecycle, give to charity shop; find novel other uses for things (i used to make planters out of old car tyres).

    maximum recycling.

    the organic fraction is a great resource;

    biodigestion for gas and compost production;

    pyrolisis (a very controlled form of burning) for heat, gas and bio-char production;
