Wasted Tears to battle it out again at Del Mar to land the John C. Mabee Stakes again this year
The tough 6-year-old mare, Wasted Tears, will make her way back to Del Mar to defend her title in the Grade 2 $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes on 14 August, 2011.
The Texas based mare will face tough competition in the Del Mar fixture, which has reeled in eight tough horses despite the running of the $750,000 Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park a day before the John Mabee Stakes.
Bart B. Evans trained and owned, Wasted Tears won the 1 1/8 mile event run on turf last year on 15 August, 2010 under jockey Rajiv Maragh. She did not run that distance in the whole of 2010, except the one time in John Mabee Stakes, and neither has she contested
this year on 1 1/8 miles.
The daughter of Najran out of Wishes and Roses by Greinton, Wasted Tears has had two starts this year, and she has been successful in one at Lone Star Park on 30 May, 2011, running in the Grade 3 Ouija Board Distaff H over at a distance of 1 mile.
The mare under J Leparoux for the first time ran a magnificent race as she completed the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 34.06 seconds, downing her closest rivals on the way Category Seven and Sheer Beauty to win the event.
Her second start of the year came at Arlington Park when she ran in the Grade Modesty Stakes on 9 July, 2011. J Leparoux as her ride, the pair looked good right from the outset, breaking well from the gates and maintaining a good pace in the 1 3/16 miles
event.
Entering the mid stretch, Wasted Tears lost her grip on the race as she started giving way to My Baby Baby and Roamin Robin, while chasing the leader Fantasia. The 6-year-old mare fell back to finish fifth with the final time of 1 minute and 53.80 seconds.
John C. Mabee Stakes have attracted seven other fillies apart from the reigning champion, and the most prominent two Celtic Princess and Harmonious, who were the one-two in the Grade 1 Royal Heroine Mile run on turf.
The old John C. Mabee rivals will clash again as Lilly Fa Pootz the runner up of the fixture last year returns to the arena to try to win which she was so close to winning last year. Lilly Fa Pootz lost by a nose to Wasted Tears in the last year 9 furlongs
event.
The multiple stakes winner Cozi Rosie and Malibu Pier will also be contesting at Del Mar, with the likes of Medaglia d’Armour, the Irish bred Turning Top and A C Avila's Go Forth North will complete the John C Mabee line up.
