inXile Entertainment could welcome Obsidian on to the development team if they can reach the $2.1-million mark within the next 17 days to fund the project.
Many gamers will not be too familiar with Wasteland, seeing how the game was released in 1988. However, a sequel may very well be in the works as Wasteland 2 is looking to get enough funding to make itself a reality.
There may be some concerns over whether or not bringing back a series that has been forgotten for over two decades is a wise move, especially seeing how Duke Nukem: Forever turned out. That, however, has not deterred a number of developers from bringing
their long absent games back for another outing, with Diablo 3 being the latest example.
Brian Fargo, who is the founder of the studio, is accepting donations for the game. The initial requirement was $900,000, which was easily raised. The next target was $1.6-million which means that Wasteland 2 would now have a Linux and a Mac version as well,
that target was also met.
Mr. Fargo now claims that if they can reach the $2.1-million mark then Obsidian, the studio that developed Fallout: New Vegas, would co-develop Wasteland 2. Yet, as with everything, there is a catch as the money needs to be raised with the next 17 days.
Both studios seems excited about the possibility of working with each other as Chris Avellone, one of the talented members of Obsidian, commented, “Wasteland is one of my favourite RPGs of all time, and when Brain (Fargo) asked if I wanted to work on the
sequel, I jumped at the chance.”
As for Brain, well it turns out the developer not only has a “history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay’s Black Isle studios,” but that he is attracted to what the studio are capable of adding in terms of taking the game
forward.
He said, “Obsidian has an incredible library of story, dialog and design tools that they have used to create hits like Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and of course, Fallout: New Vegas.”
Here’s to hoping that Wasteland 2 has every chance of being as great as the first game.
