Question:

Wasting time - applying to jobs less experience?

hello,

I have been desperately looking for full time work in the NYC/NJ area. I have a BA degree in Communications/Journalism. Mostly I've been looking for paralegal jobs, admin. assistant, and research positions. All things that I'm interested. I notice a lot of jobs are asking for 3-5 years experience. Sometimes I meet all the other requirements except that one. I just have educational background! Am I wasting my time (and my resume will be passed over anyway) by applying for jobs where I don't meet ALL of the requirements. Thank you.

  1. If they say they want 3-5 years of experience, they basically want someone who already has a job in that field to leave their job for them!  You ARE wasting your time by applying to these jobs, and you should look for entry level positions in a related field so you can work your way up to a paralegal position.

Oh and just so you know I know what I'm talking about.  I have a degree in Graphic Design and have been looking for an ENTRY level position and I STILL can't find one. The job market is just really bad right now and people who say that they are looking for an entry-level person are usually looking for people with experience.  It's sad but very, very true.
