If you want to elicit the muscle to contract you will place the electrical stim on or near the motor point.  If you are wanting to use the e-stim for pain relief/edema (swelling) management you will avoid the motor point.  The Motor point is where the nerve innervates (goes into) the muscle, and is the most effective point to stimulate the muscle for a contraction.
