  1. Bailey is an occupational surname for those who were bailiffs - sheriffs, mayors and other officials.

Jane is a feminization of John - "God is gracious."

Jack is a nickname from John, so again, "God is gracious."

William comes from old Germanic elements that mean "desire" and "protection" - it's tough to put that into one concept, so they're usually listed exactly like that.

Pierce is a surname related to the given name Peter, which means stone or rock.

Harlow is a surname with disputed meaning; I've seen it most often as a geographic name designating a hill.

Gia is short for Gianna or Giovanna, the feminine versions of the Italian Giovanni - or John.  So, again, "God is gracious."

    Winter is simply the season.

Jordan is from the Biblical river.  The name means something like "flow down" in Hebrew.

Ryde puzzles me.  There are places in England and Australia called Ryde, but it doesn't have any history as a given name.

Michael is from a Hebrew name that means "who is like God?"  That actually means something along the lines of "no one is like God."

Charmine is tricky.  Assuming it's a variant of Charma, it means joy or delight, from the Greek.  If it's a variant of Carmen, it means song.

Lioan doesn't appear to have any distinct origins; I assume it is invented, and thus without defensible etymological roots.

Crystal means clear, from a Greek word that means ice.  Renee is a form of Renatus, meaning born again.  Rylie, assuming it is a respelling of Riley, actually has no confirmed meaning, despite being a common surname, though some suggest that it is related to an old English word for rye, the grain - as in a place where rye is grown.

ETA:  Be wary of any site that gives you unambiguous meanings for names.  Behindthename.com is fabulous - beautifully researched and accurate, and quick to note when names are in dispute.  But many personal names have hundreds, if not thousands, of years of history behind them - and that makes pinning down an exact meaning quite challenging, really nearly impossible at times.

  2. Are you actually going to name your child those hideous spellings and combinations? With the exception of Jack William Pierce, which is awesome, the rest sound like you got your baby names from STAR magazine.  Harlow is Nicole Ritchie's girl, Gia was a drug-addict L*****n model who died of AIDS, Ryde is like Ryder Goldie Hawn's grandson, and just a hint- if you have to put parentheses with the phonetic spelling of a name- you can bet it will be a life long curse.

Just spell them the common way would you? Give your kid a chance to find a mug with her name on it! Protect him from the anxiety of teachers and strangers misspelling his name and then rolling their eyes at your attempt to be unique.

Save the "creative" naming for your pets. At least their feelings won't get hurt on the first day of school every year.

  3. Baily means 'Bailiff' and Jayne means 'God is gracious'.

Jack means 'God is gracious', William means 'Protection' and Pierce means 'Stone'.

Harlow means 'Hill with heaps of rocks', Gia means 'God is gracious' and Winter simply means 'Winter'.

Jordan means 'Descend', Ryde means 'Ride' and Michael means 'Like God'.

Charmine means 'Charming' and Lioan means 'Lion'.

Crystal means 'Crystal', Renee means 'Reborn' and Rylie means 'Rye Clearing'.

    Good luck!
