  1. strong side LB- plays on the strong side of the field (side with more WR's and RB's) doesn't matter left or right.

weak side LB- plays on the weak side of the field (side with less WR's and RB's) doesn't matter right or left

nose tackle- the DL that plays accross from the center.

  2. Ok your strong side LB is on the side with the most offensive players because thats normally the side they will run it to, so your SSLB is your best LB.

Nose tackle (defensive position) lines up on the center.

                                                      O

                                           O      O     O     O           O

                                             O   O   O   O

                                             OOOOOOO     O        O

                                                     OO

  3. The strong side LB lines up on the TE side of the defense. The weak side LB lines up on the open side of the defense. Usually the strong side LB is primarily a run stopper while the weak side LB is primarily a pass protector as he has to cover the slot receiver at times.

A nose tackle aligns over the center and is a run stopper. He is usually assigned two gaps along the line and must hold them against the run as apposed to a DE who is a run stopper who also is a pass rusher.

  4. The strongside linebacker lines up over the tight end.

A nose tackle is the defensive lineman in the middle of the line on a 3-4 defense. 3-4 meaning three linemen, four linebackers. The Cowboys, Cardinals, Patriots, Steelers, Dolphins, Jets, Ravens, and Chargers are the NFL teams that currently use a 3-4.

  5. A strong side linebacker is the linebacker that lines up on the strong side of the offense, which is normally where the tight end is in the formation. The strong side linebacker is normally used as running down linebacker, who is great at shedding blockers and tackling the running backs. The normally call the strong side linebacker as the Left Outside Linebacker (LOLB) because in a Pro set I formation, the tight end lines up on the right side of the offensive line, which when flipped over, is the left side of the defense.

A weak side linebacker is the exact opposite of a strong side linebacker. A weak side linebacker lines up the weak side of the offensive formation, which normally is the side without a tight end. the weak side linebacker is typically kept on the field for all 3 downs, including passing downs, because of his speed and athleticism to drop back into coverage, or blitz the quarterback. They normally call the weak side linebacker a Right Outside Linebacker (ROLB) because the weak side of a offense is the left side, where the quarterback's blind spot is, and when flipped, is the right side of the defense.

A Nose Tackle is a type of defensive tackle with two distinct characteristics. The first characteristic is they are normally larger than your typical defensive tackle. For example, your typical defensive tackle is around 6'2 to 6'4, and around 305lbs. A Nose Tackle is usually more stout, at around 6'1 to 6'3 and close to 325lbs or higher. This is required for the second trait of a Nose Tackle. A Nose Tackle is required to play the "0" technique, which means he directly lined up across from the Center on offense, and is normally asked to bull rush, and eat up 2 offensive lineman. A Nose Tackle is most common in a 3-4 defense, because of his size he can eat up extra blockers, allowing for one-on-one matchups with either defensive end, and also allowing the 4 linebackers to blitz and shoot gaps easier.

  6. A strong side linebacker is the linebacker on the side where the tightend would usually line up and the weak side linebacker, plays on the other side. Then of course there is either one or two middles, depending on the defense you play.
