  1. The throttle valve controls the flow of fuel or of fuel/air mixture into an internal combustion engine.

In a carburetor-equipped piston engine, the throttle valve is a movable vane set in the narrow part of the carburetor ventura.  It is connected to the accelerator pedal on a car or truck, or to the throttle k**b on a piston engine airplane.

In a fuel-injection engine, it is part of the metering device that feeds fuel to the fuel injectors.

In a turboprop, turbojet or fanjet engine, the throttle valve is a metering valve in the system that feeds fuel to the combustion chambers.

It's a lot easier to explain with pictures and diagrams.  To get these, do an internet search on "throttle valve."

  2. A throttle valve is a device installed in the fuel systems of engines which regulates the pre-determined amounts of fuel and air which reach the combustion areas of the engines. When power is needed, the operator opens the throttle/accelerator which in turn increases the supply of fuel/air mixture thereby increasing the speed of the engine. And vice versa, when the throttle valve closes it reduces the flow of air/fuel mixture. Throttle valves come in different styles and configurations and are actuated by various methods (mechanical/electrical/electronic/pneuma... etc).

  3. A throttle valve will ONLY regulate de amount of AIR entering the engine, a carburetor will add a proportional/suitable amount of fuel for the air flow allowed by the throttle valve.

Ease of use kept the name of the device controlling the power output from an engine called Throttle levers, even on not carburetor equipped engines.

    Cheers
