G'day mate for a 12 year year old i would use a 257 Roberts or maybe a 243 win they are not to bad and he'll love it fit it with a Burris scope 4x16x44 signature select lrs & balistic plex rectical they are a strong scope cheers mate

Q: wat is best to use to deer hunt wit?

A: I've killed two deer dead with: 1. An old E-250 Ford van & 2. A new Chevrolet S-10 P/U Truck.  Also, not so dead two deer with a .223 which like the first two I don't recommend using.  At least the first two deer were killed outright.  The ones shot with the .223 had to be shot twice and so I've retired the .223 as a deer-hunter.  I can't recommend any of these for deer.  

What I do recommend is the .25-06 Remington.  I've killed a half-dozen-deer dead with this caliber and I consider it the ideal deer caliber.  I can also recommend the .270 Winchester which too is a stellar deer caliber.  I've killed two deer with this one and they just dropped.   I've also killed one deer with a .243 Winchester.  This is what I recommend as the minimum deer caliber.  Provisos:  In the .243 Winchester use quality hunting ammo at least 90 grains in weight and 100 or 105 weight is even better.  

For your 12 year old son?  If he can handle the .243 Winchester that is what I recommend.  If it is too much for him consider a .44 Magnum carbine or rifle.  I gave my 15 year old nephew a .44 Magnum 1892 lever-action with the 20" barrel as his first deer gun.  He's going on 18 now and he still uses it. This one recoils a bit more than the .243 and the .30-30 but it has less of a muzzle-blast and for a first time big game rifle it seems less intimidating to shoot than the louder .243 or .30-30.
