  1. The best camcorder to work with an Apple Macintosh computer is typically the best camcorder to work with a Windows based computer.

    One that uses MiniDV tape.

All Macs for the last 10 years or so have a firewire400 port. The only exception is the MacBook Air. In addition to the miniDV tape based camcorder, you need to get a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. You did not tell us which Mac you have.

Since you did not give us a budget:

    Low: Canon ZR900, ZR930, Panasonic PV-GS320

    Mid: Canon HV20; Sony HDR-HC9

    High: Sony HDR-FX1, Canon XHA1

There are others, but this is a good start.

  2. The best camcorder to use with a Mac is one that records to DV tape. This also includes all cameras that record to HDV, miniDV, full size DV, 8mm, Hi-8, and Digital8 tape cassettes.   All of these camcorders connect to the computer via Firewire which is the basis of video capture for almost every video editing program.

Since 2000, computer manufacturers have included firewire ports on almost every computer because their free digital video editing programs required Firewire for video capture.  in 1999, MiniDV and Digital8 cameras were the new main consumer technology which were being developed from the success of the newly digitized ENG (Electronic News Gathering) world.  These are the cameras that brought you 9-11 and the war in Afghanistan.  Iraq got the HD treatment.
