asics are really good running shoes.

i have had many running coaches recomend them to me.

there is 3 types of shoe.

cushioning, structured cushioning, and maximun support.

it has to do with the arch of your foot.

if you go to a running store they can help you find the best shoe for you.

It really depends on your running economy. Do you have high, medium, or low arches? Nike is probably best for those with high arches. New Balance typically carries the better shoes for those with low arches. I own a pair of saucony progrid omni 7 moderates and i love how they fit like a glove. You will either want motion control shoes (for those with low arches), stability shoes (for those with medium arches), or neutral cushioning shoes (for those with high arches). When all else fails, ask a seasoned vet or a specialized shoe worker at a store like d**k's, Reebok, or Nike. Ask for details about pronation, arch type, and gait. Hope it helps!

Every long distance runner has different needs. Different footstrikes. Different foot shapes. There is no one brand that is superior for the distance runner. If it were so, there would only need to be one brand of running shoe.

Brooks are good. Mizuno are good. New Balance are good.

Don't buy by brand or shoe type though. Go to a running store and get fitted by someone who will watch you run and help you decide what is the best shoe for you.
