they are just different folders, but they are special compared to other folders.

suppose you have an account called "loser" on a winxp system. the path to each will be

C:\Documents and Settings\loser\Desktop

C:\Documents and Settings\loser\My Documents

My Documents is all of the things that you have saved (ie., papers)

Which Desktop is the places you can go to save things to your documents (ie., Microsoft Works)

Location! My documents is a folder in document and settings...and in your personal folder..

well the desktop is what you see when you open windows. All the icons, shortcuts and maybe even files are called being on the desktop. My documents is a separate file folder.
