  1. A New Moon happens regularly, about every 30 days. The moon then is located somewhere between the sun and the earth.

Therefore, the sunshine illuminates the rear side of the moon, while the front, which we can see from earth, stays dark. That's why we can't see the new moon.

The opposite of new moon is the full moon. It also happens regularly, but now, the moon is located on the other side; thus, the earth is between the sun and the moon, so that we can see the illuminated face of our natural satellite.

A special case of the full moon happens when the three are nearly perfectly aligned : this time, the shadow of the earth falls upon the illuminated face of the moon, thus darkening it. At this full moon, we have a lunar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse can be seen from half the world (seeing the moon at that time means seeing the eclipse). And as the earth's shadow is bigger than the moon, it can last much longer than a solar eclipse. Additionally, this leads to an increased frequency of lunar eclipses, especially total ones.

In a nutshell, a lunar eclipse and a new moon are not the same thing. A lunar eclipse can only occur when the earth's shadow passes across a Full Moon.

  2. Lunar eclipses happen at full moon

Solar eclipses happen at new moon.

But we don;t get a lunar eclipse every full moon or a solar eclipse every new moon because the moons orbit isn't in the same plane as the earth's orbit around the sun. Consequently, eclipses happen only when these orbital planes cross - which happens twice a year

  3. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the shadow of the Earth - when the moon is farthest from the sun.

A New moon occurs when the side of the moon facing Earth is in it's own shadow - when the moon is closest to the sun.

  4. the guy above got the lunar eclipse right. the new moon is a phase in the cycle.

  5. The aparant path of Sun and Moon are tilted about 5.8degree.So only when three objects come in stright line, eclipse happens. There is one new moon in 28days but not eclipse.Eclipse happens when the objects come near the nodes either acsendning or decending node.

So all new moons dont have eclipses.
