  1. I would do a search on any well known search engine and find songs for each one. I learned a song for the states in the 5th grade and I still remember it.

  2. study a map of the US.

then get copies of a blank map and try to fill in the states and capitals.

make sure you do this twice a day, maybe right after school and then again before you go to bed.

  3. Make flashcards. Get the regular index cards cut them in half so they are two rectangles.  Write the name of the state on one and then the name of the capital on the other.  Go through all of them and don't forget to shuffle.  Before your test go through it a few more times and you'll be all set

  4. Make a list of all states in alphabetical order. Then count the number of each state by its first letter.  Write the list down. A has four, B has none, C has three. Then write down those 7 states from memory. Then go on in groups of three letters, always going back to "A". Building and building.  When you have all the states down, go back and learn the capitals, in groups of three, and build on them the same way.

I'm not American, but I did just that as a memory exercise and an exercise to improve my handwriting.

  5. I learned states at 3yrs old this way and capitals after learning to readsome.

Get a U.S. PICTURE PUZZLE. Play with a child and teach them where each state goes (the child will want to do this over and over -- probably every time they see you IF you make it fun.

Say the name of the state and the CAPITAL CITY before you are allowed to place the state "tile" into position. [you might easily find a version with the capital cities printed on each state]

YOU WILL LEARN FAST, because the kid will outdo you if you don't (ha).

I forgot: make up rhymes for the city names -- like Delaware, Dover the cat jumped over or even a nonsensible: Helena Belena   Just try it.

  6. Or you can go state with capital and follow the first answer and add pictures to help you remember each one in your mind.....Have Fun....

  7. Find the Animaniacs songs about the states of the union and their capitals and play it to death.
