  1. On smaller farms which grow rice, the water buffalo is still used and in areas where complete deforestation is not allowed, the elephant is used to obtain and recover trees, also an animal you wouldn't think to be used, the camel as well as cattle .  India's wheat crop is grown similar to ours, they use tractors and combines , except the small farms of course which harvest by hand and a village will go together and rent a thrashing machine to recover wheat or rice.

    India's biggest problem with feeding itself is the restriction of land ownership to very small parcels.  Most farming in India is done by hand.  If personal ownership of land were limited in most countries like it is in India, the whole world would be having food shortages.

    A student of mine who was in the US for the first time was very eager to see my parents farm.  When we took him on a tour of the property, he said this is illegal, in my country an individual can only own about 20 hectares, roughly 50 acres.
