  1. "Poltergeist (from German poltern, meaning to rumble or make noise, and Geist, meaning "ghost", "spirit", or "embodiment") denotes a demonic spirit or ghost that manifests itself by moving and influencing objects."

"A ghost is said to be the apparition of a deceased person, frequently similar in appearance to that person, and usually encountered in places she or he frequented, or in association with the person's former belongings. The word "ghost" may also refer to the spirit or soul of a deceased person, or to any spirit or demon.[1][2][3] Ghosts are often associated with hauntings."

So pretty much, poltergeists are ghosts too, but they influence their surroundings and knock things around, whereas ghosts are your more cliche examples.

So when you see videos where ghosts are apparently smashing the p**s out of things, that would be a poltergeist.

  2. A ghost is usually described as the soul of a person who after death, stayed behind in our world instead of passing on to the next.

A poltergeist is a type of haunting.

  3. Poltergeist is a German word for "noisy ghost." This type of ghost makes its presence known by knocking on doors, walls, breaking objects, making objects disappear then reappear, making objects float through the air, making noises and a variety of other disruptive things to draw attention to itself. Generally speaking a poltergeist will not harm people. Poltergeist tend to occur when children are present in the household that are either very young or in their teen years.

There are two types of poltergeists. One is the poltergeist that is directly tied to a ghostly spirit; meaning an entity that has crossed over to the other side. The second is the non-entity poltergeist. This type of poltergeist is directly tied to a child entering puberty and the energies they put out causes the effects of poltergeist activities, yet is directly generated by the child and not a spirit. This type of poltergeist will disappear soon after the hormonal activities of the child settles down and reaches a leveling out pattern.

A ghost, also known as a specter, spirit, or apparition is the essence of the life of someone who has died physically. In short it is their soul, which lives on after physical death.

  4. There are two schools of thought on this.  The first is that a poltergeist is just another kind of entity, one with the ability to move things around.  The other is that a poltergeist is activity generating from someone with psyhokinetic ability who cannot control their ability and is projecting strong, negative emotion such as fear, anxiety or anger by moving things around, attacking, etc.  If you watch the TV programs like A Haunting or Ghost Hunters you will see both entities throwing items around and striking people and movement and attacks explained by someone in the house with PK.  Since there is really no way to prove one or the other (or maybe a third and less explored option is that some poltergeists are entities that used to be people with PK), it is really up to you which school of thought you choose to follow, if any.

  5. I think glamorous girl gave a pretty good description of a poltergeist but I disagree with them being harmless.  A poltergeist can harm the living.  I have a set of stairs in my house & on a few occasions a child & an adult was pushed down the stairs.  On another occasion I was touched on the neck by a poltergiest which at the time felt like a burn from dry ice.

  6. Entity, ghost, spirit, apparition are all the conscious energy that was left from a living person after they have died. .

Poltergeist is a form of ghost activity where they are unhappy. They usually feed off our fear. To seek our attention they resort to activities in the physical plane like throwing objects. They also known to hide things and then when the person is going crazy looking for it, they make it appear in another place. A poltergeist is basically manifested by a human but unconsciously. Usually created by someone who has just been through a tragedy or is going through one.

Watch the movie An American Haunting, or if you already have you know that the young girl is getting molested by her father, well she creates this Poltergeist that continually attacks her because of her own fears and to what's happening to her. The movie gives you a good description of a Poltergeist.

  7. The term ghost is for .. say a picture of a moment stuck in time.  A mass of energy that produces an image.  The term poltergeist is german for noisy ghost.  Some say it is a spirit or entity that is active.  A spirit that will feed off negative emotions to thrive.  A poltergeist will make objects move and cause disturbances.  In my life's experience I believe that these ghosts and spirits are nothing more than demonic beings.  When a loved one dies they do not come back in spirit form.  Demons love to disguise themselves to manipulate humans. Check into demonology.

  8. Actually,

over recent years, further studies into poltergeist activity show that it's less supernatural than you would think. The most widely accepted theory is that poltergeist activity stems from people...

Most commonly, teenagers going through puberty. Apparently the energy that people in turmoil give off causes these strange occurrences, like things moving, loud noises, and there isn't even a ghost at all. When the person in turmoil is not around, the activity almost stops completely.

So, poltergeist activity isn't really even a ghost, that's the difference.

  9. Nothing really both are spirits of people once alive but the word poltergeist means Noisy ghost.

  10. Yup.  Ghosts do more of the haunting, and poltergeists just sort of fool around.

The above answerer did a very good job explaining ;)

  11. A ghost is supposedly the soul of a dead person.

A poltergeist is supposed to be a ghost that manifests its presence by noises, knocking, & other things of that nature.
