  1. something like

    700 MHz x86 processor

384 MB of system memory (RAM)

but if you are low on resources you would be better off running xubuntu which will run a lot better on a low specced machine.

  2. I've run Debian etch (the equivalent of heron, essentially), on a Pentium MMX with 100 MB memory and a 7G hard drive.  It's slow but it runs.

I've been given as a reason (by a developer) for the continuing close relationship between Debian and *buntu the economical use of hardware and the efficiency of its use of Linux.  I would still, generally, not try KDE 3.x with less than 256M memory.   Having recently subjected myself to KDE 4.0 on Fedora Core 9  I am not anxious to do so again, and don't want to venture an estimate for system memory until I stop being so angry.

All the *buntus have very low minimum requirements though.  You can run into trouble with them but it takes work.
