  1. Know what times to serve what kind of serve, and you're probably going to be playing doubles. Learn poaching, which is intercepting a shot for a volley and hitting a winner. Also learn the overhead smash, and you have to volley well in doubles or else it's useless playing doubles.

Never hit it to the net player. They'll easily put it away. Don't lob! You must know how to hit a passing shot. Also, the first serve is critical. If you have a good serve, you'll be a good doubles player.

  2. First, you should know the rules

Second, bring a racquet and a can of balls.......the rest is up to your athletic ability and determination to learn to play the game well.

    Its a game....have fun!

  3. The most important thing in tennis is your racket and your footwear.

I have already given the answer for the racket selection in your earlier question about what racket you need to buy.

Buy a good pair of tennis shoe, most of the tennis accidents occur because of the wrong choice of foot wear. I have friends who wore running shoes while playing tennis and they tore there ACL.

Besides these you dont need anything else, anyways the balls will be provided by the instructor.

Once you start taking the tennis lessons just make it sure you follow the footwork properly its the most important and basic part of tennis.

or if you don't want to go there just read this:

    Something Hard to explain compressed:

    1. Racket- (most important...) if you are serious about this tennis thing you are about to enter... buy a nice racket but not in the "advanced" player range... if you are not so serious, then just buy a cheap racket... but not like the ones from Wal-mart, i suggest maybe a 70 dollar or less racket... there must be one fit for you...

    2. Shoes- personally, you don't have to have the nice 100 something dollar pro tennis shoes if you are just starting to play ... just use a pair of running shoes... exception*: don't use dress shoes, or something that is uncomfortable to you.... your in college... be smart =]

    3. Clothing- wear anything that you will feel in when you sweat...seriously

    4. Misc.- if you want to get good... take some lessons from a pro or instructor at a local court near you. thank you.....

    hope this helps.... =]

  5. You don't really need to know much before your lesson. If it's a beginner's lesson, and I assume it is, you'll be taught all you need to know to start.

All you really need is a good pair of tennis shoes and a racquet. The balls should be provided by the instructor.

Just show up, learn how to play, and have fun.
