i would avoid crappy gimmicks such as severe bits if i were you.

A hackamore worked well for my horse.

You have to be very careful with bits and gadgets, you can ruin a horse's mouth by using a bit that is too severe.  For a start a hackamore (despite being bitless) should only be used by an experienced rider.

You should go back to the beginning with your horse and review his training, i he is misbehaving you need to rule out other factors such as pain or lack of training before you slap a severe bit in his mouth.

Start with a plain snaffle and gradually work your way up.  Does you horse wear a flash noseband?  These are used too often and don't do a lot of horses any good, try taking it of and you may find he fights less.

I wont recommend a type of bit as you need to work with whatever suits your horse.  Review his training and physical wellbeing, if he still causes you problems talk to your instructor.
