  1. The last-place finisher in the first ever Kentucky Derby was a horse named Gold Mine.  http://www.kentuckyderby.com/2005/derby_...

    Aristides, the horse that won the race, wasn't supposed to win.  Aristides was entered as a "rabbit" (i.e., horse to set a fast pace) for Chesapeake, the supposedly better of owner H. P. McGrath's two entries in the Derby.  But Chesapeake got off to a bad start and lost all chance;  so McGrath waved the jockey on Aristides on to win.  

    Gold Mine, the last-place finisher, was a filly sired by the great sire *Australian, out of Income, by Revenue.
