what are the best settings ( on dvd player and tv ) to watch blue ray dvds from a sony PS3 to a samsung 50"DLP TV ( model # P5063W/HL). I'm talking about picture quality as well as not losing about half the screen to black bars ( due to 2.40:1 aspect ratio) without distorting the film too much. Thanks

  1. The only way to get rid of the black bars is to change the view mode or aspect on the TV. On your remote, press the P.Size button and select Zoom1 or Zoom2. This will zoom in on the image and chop off the sides of the picture in order to fill the screen better.

  2. First things first, blu ray discs are not DVDs

For the best picture quality, you probably want to see what's coming off that blu ray disc without being messed with by your TVs various video enhancement modes. If picture quality is the number one concern, there are a few things that come to mind.

First, rent or buy a test disc to dial your TV in for an accurate color temp, contrast and brightness.

Next, see if your TV has a kind of 'pure 1080' mode. The name changes depending on the TV maker, but it's all about showing those 1080x1920 lines pixel for pixel without overscanning or another other funny business.

Next, does your blu ray support 24 frame per sec output? And does the TV has a special mode for the 24, like a 5-5 pulldown or some othe fancy name? Match those two up, see what you get.

And of course, for best picture HDMI connection all the way.

  3. Most not all Bluray's will fill the entire screen.  If one does have the "black bars," then that is the way the movie is presented.  Zooming in or etc. will only degrade the picture, etc.
