  1. Hi Melisa!

You'll be able to see a tiny bit of the partial eclipse of the sun from Turkey Friday afternoon, and you'll definitely need special glasses, such as welder's glasses to see it.

From Istanbul, the eclipse starts at 12:37 p.m. East European Summer Time and lasts until 1:58 p.m.  At mid eclipse, around 1:18 p.m., only about 5% of the sun's disc is covered, so you'll notice only a small nudge into the bottom of the sun, and only if you use welder's glasses to reduce solar glare.

Even at Rize, on the northeastern Black Sea coast, which get's Turkey's best view, barely 19% of the sun is covered.  It's not much of an eclipse for Turkey.

The total eclipse happens over Siberia and central China, too far away for Turkey to get much to see.

Turkey gets its next total solar eclipse April 30, 2060.
