Watchmen book help (easy 10 points)!

Hello all. I wanna read the Watchmen before the movie comes out. I decided to go pick it up online, but i don't know what book (or books) i should be buying.

There are so many Watchmen books, and the kid who works at my local comic book shop doesn't even know what the Watchmen is.

So my question is simple; if i wanna read the watchmen. and be able to say "I read the Watchmen" what book(s) should i pick up?

The entire Watchmen series ran for twelve issues. There is, however, an "Absolute Edition" that contains each issue. It should be available at your local comic store, despite what that kid might think. (They are selling out fast, however.) Copies are also available in the graphic novel sections of bookstores, just ask the people at the reference desk. (It was written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons.)
