Water Filter Cartridges - how long do they last?

I'm about to buy a water filtering thing, and just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how long the cartridges last for??

Hi the one I got had a dial on the lid that you turned every day and I think it lasted a month and then you had to change it, the only thing wrong with them is if there is alot of you in your house the water doesnt last long and it takes a while for the water to filer, and the filters are quite expensive if you want to change them and it all depends on the brand to how dear they are.

I say its cheaper just to buy a big 5ltr bottle of water that has been filterd for you.

It depends on usuage.

I have a Brita with a little timer on the lid that is supposed to tell you when the filter needs changing. It is only a very rough guide at best because it is just that, a (four week) timer which obviously assumes a certain amount of usage each day.

I've found that for me the timer says the filter needs changing when there is still plenty of life left in it. You can tell by the taste of the water when the filter is not at it's best and needs replacing. For me and my usuage this is at least two to three months.
