Water In Take for a 15 Year Old Kitty

My 15 year old kitty drinks about 2/3 cup of water a day and I was wondering if that is too much or abour right. She is doing fine but does have acid reflex in the mornings once in awhile & will throw up just water in the mornings. Beside her water intake, I was also wondering if maybe there is something I could do concerning her food so that she will not have an upset stomach once in awhile & it will keep her stomach settled down? She is a very picky eater & will only eat food that is mushy soft or tuna in spring water. She will not eat anthing chunky, not even the tuna. She like mostly the juice in it or if it is super mushy.

  1. Best thing to do is get a senior wellness blood profile done to make sure her kidneys ect are functioning properly. Older cats can have renal failure and become diabetic. A vet can help you with this so she can be around longer. I have a 18 yr old cat and I give him SQ fluids 2 times a week. It helps to flush ou the kidneys and it also hydrates him. a Vet can show you how to do this at home to avoid the cost of taking her in on a weekly basis.

  2. Sounds like your kitty is just getting older she may be beginning to have kidney problems. If your vet hasn't done a blood and urine test for awhile it's probably time to start keeping track. Consult with your Vet and see if some KD cat food might be in order it comes in both dry and wet forms. Many Vets believe that wet food is better because of the extra moisture although it's harder on their teeth. If you kitty is having kidney problems the sooner you start taking care of it the longer you will get to keep her. I have also had cats that wouldn't eat anything except one kind of food and we couldn't switch to the special diet it's better to eat something than nothing. Good luck with your girl.

  3. thats about right for a cat. did you know that cats  dont have the sense to know thirst? serious. the acid reflux might be from chemicals in tap, it gives me indigestion. try  bottled water. cats love catnip, its like marijane is to humans, it relaxes them , mellows them out. and it great for there physcie.

  4. Due to her age, if you're concerned that she's drinking too much water, take her to a vet. Large consumption of water can be a sign of diabetes.

What you can do about the food is, if she begins having trouble eating, give her a little bit of lamb baby food. Don't overdo it, but cats really love it. That's what we fed our cat when she contracted feline hepatic lipidosis. You could also try mushing up her kitty food.

  5. she has all the signs of kidney disease-you need to get her to the vet for blood tests as it is a manageable condition(our cat lived 5 years after being diagnosed) the toxins in the blood cause stomach irritation-our cat was prescribed Cimetidine which helped her stomach a lot

  6. leave the poor thing alone, its summertime shes probably burning up

  7. It does seem that some kitties get more picky as they get older.  It can be frustrating when all you want to do is make them happy and feed them what is best for them.

It is hard to say how much water or food is enough.  A better rule of thumb would be to monitor for any type of change in her physical appearance.  Such as, has she lost weight or does she act differently?

But the best way to know if what she is doing is healthy would be to run some simple blood work.  Many Vets recommed that cats and dogs have a "senior blood panel" run every 6 months or so when they are over 8 or 9yrs old.

Have you checked her teeth and gums recently?  Perhaps there is something bothering her there that makes her not want to chew?

Anyway,  I hope she is ok.  15 is great...   You must be doing something right :)
