Question:

Water damage to canon digital camera?

I bought a canon powershot digital camera a little over a month ago (model sd750). Last week I accidentally dropped it in a creek and took it out immediately. I shouldn't have turned it on while it was wet but I didnt know that and I panicked so I did and the lcd screen turned white with lines on it. I turned it off and on again a while later without drying it completly and afterwards it wasn't even turning on. I'm pretty sure I short circuited the camera :( I contacted canon but didnt mention how I messed up my camera and they told me to send my camera in. I was wondering how companies can tell if something has been water damaged? I opened the camera but couldnt find any white sticker like the ones on cell phones and there wasnt any signs of corrosion either as far as I could see but I didnt open the camera up completely. So I'm not sure if I should send my camera or if they will immediately know how it was damaged? Thank you for your help

  1. Since you tried to turn it on while it was wet, I'm sure you ruined your camera.  Of course, Canon can tell what happened to it!   They might be able to fix it, but it could cost almost as much as a new one.

Next time, always use the wrist strap when you handle it, so you won't drop it.

  2. just send it in.

you probably have a warranty on it.

and the worse that can happen is,

they wont give you a new camera.

  3. I'm sorry you dropped your camera. Now you know why Canon included that wrist strap - so you wouldn't drop your camera.

I'd estimate there is a 99.9999% chance your camera is now a paperweight. The warranty des not cover abuse from dropping or drowning your camera. Save your money and use it to buy a new camera. I suggest the Olympus Stylus 850SW since its waterproof to 10' and shock proof to a 5' drop. You should still use the wrist strap though.

  4. I would still send it in. It wouldn't hurt to try. :)

  5. I'm sorry.. I didn't read what you said it was kinda long, but if you got it n water then put the camera in a bag of rice(make sure the rice covers the WHOLE camera, and put it in a ziploc bag, and empty the air out, so no air can come in, it is supposed to take away the moisture. My friend did this with her iphone and it worked, and it works alot of the time. Not sure if it will for you, but it might!! good luck

PS- LEAVE THE camera in the bag with rice for a day !oh and also make sure it isn't cooked rice sorry, just rice that is in the bag, the rice that is hard.

  6. haha, sounds like what happened to me i just left it to dry over night.then it worked fine.
