Question:

Water features in garden?

Hi, .

I have two water features. The big one stopped working many months ago and the smaller one is barely dribbling water. The Garden Centre where I bought them have closed down. Maybe, with your suggestions I can fix them myself.

Thanks.

  1. whoa you have the same name as me! lol ...

anyhow i would check at lowes or home depot if you dont feel like doing it yourself. usually they dont care who installed it.

if you would rather do it yourself i would suggest checking the water pressure to those areas and making sure there are no leaks in any of the tubing before you begin to diassemble the whole thing. sometimes just a little problem like this can be solved easily by getting more tubing or patching a hole. i am definitely not the best person to answer this so if all else fails check out some diy websites or the website of the manufacturer of your water piece. though the store has closed, the manufacturer may still be up and running.

  2. Could be a water pipe fracture or leak somwhere.  Could be limescale causing a blockage.

  3. Check your water lines - they may be clogged with debris or may be pinched or kinked, even broken after so many years underground.

If the lines are okay then examine the pumps - they have a limited life span and may just be too old.  Remove the pumps and try to operate them with clear hoses and buckets of water to see what sort of flow you have.  There could also be a flow adjustment on the pump that regulates the gallons per minute the pump will move - see if that is turned up so as not to leave you with a trickle.  Worst case scenario - replace both submersible pumps and your water features should be back in working order!

  4. Have you cleaned out or replaced the lines?  Its possible you have hard water and the calcium has backed up.

  5. It sounds as like one of two or combination of things has happened: The pumps have failed from being clogged/overworked(I mean pumping more water then the recommended lift)/ran all the time or the tubing in clogged up with sediment/algae.

My suggestion would be to take it apart, check the hosing for buildup and test the pump.

You can goto lowes/home depot locally and find all the parts you'll need. There is also hundreds of resources on the web for parts.

I suggest getting whats called a "Y" filter before all your lines. You'll have to periodically check/clean it. This will prevent your lines from every becoming clogged again. Also if you have to get a new pump, get an oversized one so that it lasts longer.

  6. try cleaning the pump filters, if they are blocked the pumps will eventually burn out

  7. If they do not have filters, then just blow the water lines out.If the large one ran for a period of time with no water flow the pump may have burned out.Does the pump make any sound at all when power is on? If nothing happens when the lines are clean, remove the pump.Take it with you to a Home Depot,Lowes or similar store. They carry pumps for water gardens. You may find the size you need. The pump should have a label on it with voltage, and flow rate in gallons per minute.
