For my homework, I have to design a way for my school to collect and supply its own water that would be used for everything. It is very near a river.

What water purification/filtration systems could be suitable?

Many thanks.

  1. The first way is to save some of your rain water. This is cleanest and needs less purification. Mostly, this would require some cleanup because the rain falls through dirty air and onto dirty roofs. but this can be done with filtration.

  2. The standard process for treating domestic water supplies is

    1) coagulation - adding a coagulant like alum to get the smaller suspended particles form larger particles.

    2) Filtration - filter using sand, or other media, to remove the particles.

3)Disinfection - Use chemicals such as chlorine or ozone to kill any remaining bacteria in the filtered water.  This is the way water is treated for most cities that use lake or river water.  The treatment plants are large and produce from 1 million to 200 million gallons per day.

You don't say how many students and teachers are at your school, but there are prepackaged filtered plants for that use sand filled tanks, and or, reverse osmosis for filtering the water.

I suggest you make a flow chart that shows each of the processes conected in a series and explain each processes.

Here is a more detailed description of how it is done.
