Water guns????

ok personally I don't like and don't buy my children any type of toy gun,but I do not judge other parents that let there children play with it and when my children are not with me and I find out they played with one,I say you know mommy doesn't like you playing with that but I know I can't stop them from playing with them,so I just choose not to buy them

so here is my question....I got an email from my daughters daycare saying that there will be a beach party and that the children can bring beach toys including water guns...

I'm like ok whatever I don't care...

a day before the party I get an other email saying that a parent requested that there not be any water guns at the party...I got upset....she is pushing her views on us,which is not right, even if I do agree with it..I couldn't talk to the coordinater because my daughter doesn't go in the summer, but will when she returns...what is your view on this???

  1. i don't like water guns either, and i'm very uncomfortable when i see kids playing with any kind of toy gun.

i probably would have asked the daycare to not bring guns. sorry, but i don't want my kid playing with them, or seeing other kids play around with them. i might be pushing my views on others, but at least my kid won't grow up to be desensitized to guns and violence. it's a really big issue and i could talk for days about it..maybe i'm wrong, but i want my kids to be against violence.

EDIT: i reread my response, and i just wanted to add that while i would ask the daycare to not allow water guns, which i think it would be my right as a paying parent, I wouldn't force the issue on them. if other parents resisted it, then fine. I wouldn't be ok with saying nothing and going along with the group just because I was afraid to rock the boat. that's my point. i agree that the other parents that send their children there should have had as equal a say as anti-gun parent....

  2. are you against water guns or what? get over it

  3. come on, it's water guns!!

  4. I think that it is a very small matter and I would let it go.

  5. Your child isn't involved so what right do you have to say anything?  If your child were participating in the event then of course you could say something.  But your child won't even be there.  Butt out unless it involves you or your child.

  6. Why not suggest a spray / misting bottle. It is still fun for the kids but is not a gun. Now I know that your daughter is not attending for the summer, but it is still good to know what is going on there.

I too do not like my kids playing with guns of any kind. Sometimes, you can find squirters that are in the shape of animals and I'll let them use those.

I think it is alright for that parent to speak up about her beliefs. The day care should be informed and listen to parents suggestions. Young children may not understand the difference between "water guns" and "real guns". Perhaps the day care can use spray bottles or set up a sprinkler for the kids to have fun in the water.

I know it seems strange to "make a stink" about this, but I think this parent has to right to voice her opinion. Perhaps it would have been better for her to voice her views privately to the director and let the day care make the  final decision rather than have that parent be the one.

  7. I totally disagree with toy guns and won't let my children go near them under any circumstances; but who in God's name am I to impose my beliefs or disbelief on anyone? I would simply exclude my child from that activity and ask for some kind of substitute.Just the way I don't celebrate halloween, so I keep my children home on that day.

  8. My son was having a great time playing in the lovely hot weather with a water gun just today, the parent that requested this is being ridiculously over the top and supressing other children from having a good time, water guns are just fun, outdoor toys imo they don't represent a 'gun' I don't buy toy guns for my son but I think water guns/pistols are not in that category, they're great fun in the hot weather.  Of course you're entiltled to your views on these toys but you kept that to yourself, the daycare centre should not have accepted this request, whatever happened to listening to the majority? They should have told that parent tough luck, just don't let your kids bring them. I agree, she is pushing her views and it's not fair on the other kids that want to play with water guns!
