Question:

Water heater condensation leak?

How much water should you expect from water heater condensation? Does it normally get drained, or is it supposed to evaporate before it hits the floor? Is it common for the condensation drainage to leak when it gets old? Or would it be more likely the water tank itself leaking? It happens most after rain or when the room humidity is higher than normal. It seems to leak about a quart when it happens.

  1. Water heater should never have any condensation since the water is well above the dew point. It sounds like your water heater itself is leaking. Is the tank sweating? Most likely the source of leak is the drain outlet, high pressure relief valve or a bad connection on the pipes. You should first make sure your temperature setting is not set too high and try to find the source of your water leak.

  2. i don't understand why you should have condensation on your water heater,i would be inclined to think it was leaking, but possibly the cold water pipe has condensation on it  ,just wrap it with insulation ,no more water ,they make a foam length of insulating material with a round cut out for the pipe and split to get it on the pipe should take care of it..........tom

  3. A quart seems like an awful lot. Condensation is not a leak. It normally just drips down. And it isn't that uncommon.

Is this a gas unit? Is it possibly you are getting water down the exhaust when it rains?
