  1. to make your water heater more energy efficient  you could star using solar power which  mean the energy Ur using will be coming from the sun so u save money but still have lots of energy.

  2. Wrap the pipes and jacket with insulation. Also turn up the temp (only if you don't have kids to scald) so you use less hot water. Install a solar panel. Istall a tankless water heater. Recirc pump.

  3. Set the temp as low as you can, unplug when your away for the day or over night and wrap it in insulation. all will save u money.

  4. There are fiberglas blankets you can wrap around your heater to save energy. Also, use a lower setting. Hot doesn't NEED to be scalding.

Also, when the time comes, replace it with an on-demand heater.

  5. mayb get an inspection of it to make sure its running properly?

  6. In addition to what was said above, you should flush it out periodically, as debris builds up and makes it progressively less efficient over time.

Certainly the best two things are the blanket and turning it down, though.

(Just be sure your "blanket" is fireproof - like a fiberglass wrap)

  7. By a new one and read the small print. They all tell you about the impending efficacy

  8. Besides the obvious like lowering the temperature a few degrees you should flush it out periodically by emptying a few gallons out of the bottom spigot into a bucket.  This will help remove sediment.  Also, after it is about 10 years old you may need to change out the sacrificial anode (which is what prevents the insides from corroding).

  9. Keep it at a low temperature.

Wrap it with a protection blanket. (fiberglass)

    Flush it yearly.

    Use an on-demand heater.

I personally have a GE water heater and its great.

If you have a family of 4 or more, get the one in the store with the highest btuh so you can take showers at quicker intervals on the same day.

  10. Some one suggested turning it off when away over night, don't do that.  It takes more energy to heat up the water from room temperature than to keep it warm.  That would be a viable idea if you were going on vacation.

Do put the blanket around it also.

Here is another idea.  IF you are using gas to heat your water, there is an instant heat system that save 33% off of your gas bill for water heating.  Here is the link.

  11. When leaving for a 24 hr day or more turn it off at your breakers if it's electrical and turn your gas off for between that and even pilot lights, your gas is being consumed needlessly.
