Question:

Water in fridge?

Lately I've been finding puddles of water on the shelves of my fridge and collecting on the floor inside the fridge. What is causing this and is there an easy way to fix it?

I've tried different settings for the temp but it doesn't seem to help.

  1. Check the tube, that goes to the pan, either on the bottom or back of the fridge, where the water goes, when it defrosts. Most likely it is clogged.  If it is a GE, it is probably under the crisper drawer.  A tiny piece of lettuce or something like that will clog it up. While you are checking and cleaning that, also clean the pan with warm soapy water and replace it.

  2. If you have a top freezer fridge then you may have problems with the defrost system being stopped up. If its a side by side, water is probably blowing into the fridge side from the air duct from the freezer. If so

your evaporator is sweating due to low refrigerant or a defective compressor and you will have to call for service to fix it.

  3. "Self-defrosting refrigerators dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle, usually via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates.

"If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan."

One obstruction is ice buildup, like something getting spilled in the freezer.  Easy fix is to try manually defrosting the freezer which will also let the ice melt in the drain tube.
