Is this real? There is something you can buy that people are saying is real. Anyone know the truth about this?

  1. No, definitely not.  DO NOT PUT WATER IN YOUR GAS TANK.

Also, there are several other products being marketed now due to the higher gas prices that "promise" increased fuel economy.  Do not bother with anything that involves mixing something with your gas, other than the standard fuel system cleaners and "octane booster" that has been on the market for years .  Even then, be sure to read the instructions and make sure it is safe for your specific vehicle.

Rule of thumb: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  2. I agree with all above my answer.

Do not put water in your gas tank.  EVER.

If you want to put something in your gas tank to help with gas mileage, from time to time add a container of fuel injector cleaner to a tank of gas.

I like the Techron product by Chevron.  I added it to my car this past weekend and increased my gas mileage by about 3 mpg up to 27-1/2 mpg.  My 2002 car is rated for 28 mpg on the highway by the EPA.  I had three people in the car plus luggage.  I was very happy with the results.

  3. Here's how an engine works. Gas mixes with air to create fuel. The fuel is injected or pumped into the cylinder head and the piston compresses it. Spark plug ignites, causing an explosion.    Gasoline will compress.   Water will not.

Water will resist the compression cycle of the engine and cause the weakest link in your engine to rear it's ugly head. If you are lucky, it's bent push rods. If not.....you could be using some other form of transportation.  Water....not the breakfast of cars.

  4. Ah ha ha ha . If you put water in your fuel tank you will save money because you will have to walk everywhere. Ethonol can be added but only about 10% ethonol is recommended.

High powered torbocharged cars sometimes use water/methonol injection , this effectively cools the air going into the combustion chamber therefore more power. The water cools the air and the methonol dissolves the water. Diesel engines can run on  Bio diesel which is effectively old cooking fat that has been cleaned and thinned out with ethonol. It is very cheap to make and when you drive past someone it smells like a chip shop just drove past.

  5. Don't mess with your gas. Beyond all the harm water in gas can cause to your engine, it also reduces the effectiveness of your gas. Think about it for a second -- this is like adding water to logs on a fire and saying it will make the fire burn better. Gas must burn/explode in the engine in order to give you power. Water would reduce this power thus reduce your efficiency -- not the other way around.

  6. Definitely do not dilute your gas with anything.  Your engine repair bill would easily be $3000-5000

Even a slight amount of water getting up the fuel line can keep a car from starting until the line is flushed.
