Question:

Water is seeping out of an air valvue on our hot water plumbing?

We had a new pressurised hot water cylinder fitted yesterday. There is an air bleed valvue - it looks like a small black cylinder with a red plastic cap offset on the top - with a small amount of water seeping out of a small hole in the plastic cap. Should it be doing this? I dont want to pester our plumber on a bank holiday as he has his son visiting him but I am a bit concerned that we may get a larger leak.

Could anyone set my mind at rest please?

  1. Hi. Do not bother your plumber with this. It is ok for a new valve to do this for a while. Even an older valve will do this when the system has been disturbed.  As long as there are no geysers, let it be for a couple of days. I have had this happen numerous times and each time the small drip dried up. I hope this puts your mind at ease. It was nice of you to consider your plumbers life in this and hopefully you will think about this before calling him. If you take the cap off of the valve on top and depress it quickly it may spurt out a small bit of water and reseat itself. This alone may stop the seep. Hope this helps.

  2. An Automatic air vent lets air out of the system without you having to do it. They do sometimes weep a bit, but that is normal and nothing to worry about.

  3. is it vented or un-vented, is it white?.............it should'nt be leaking anywhere if it is a  sealed system

  4. The seal on the air valve is leaking, tighten the red s***w cap to stop the water or twist the whole valve into the closed position.

The valve needs to be renewed.

  5. Just pull off the red plastic cap and tighten the nut beneath it. as your plumber forgot to do this after he vented the system.

  6. Try Googling the name of your system. I doubt very much that there should be water leaking from it. Ring your plumber, he fitted the system, he should have done it right in the first place.
