Question:

Water leaking from home AC filter?

Here's my problem:

I have a rooftop air condtioning unit. When it rains, water leaks from the AC filter/intake vent. The filter itself isn't actually wet, but water collects in the corners of the filter grate and slowly drips. Water doesn't appear to be collecting in the ceiling area outside of the intake vent/duct, nor does it drip. I opened the grate and it seems to be confined to the grate area and in some insulation around the vent/duct.

Does this sound like an AC issue or a roofing issue? Our roof was recently replaced entirely (March 2008). The intake vent/duct travels directly up to the AC unit on the roof.

  1. Oh, do I know this problem! It's difficult to 100% say whether it's an AC issue or a roofing issue for you, but for us it was an AC issue. We'd come home to find water all over our carpets :(

Try a air conditioner weather seal http://frigidaire.stores.yahoo.net/acwea... . It stopped rain water from coming into our home, thankfully!

  2. there is a block in your drain from the unit...we have this problem at work with our big units...collecting grease and dirt from the kitchen area blocking the drain...just take a compressor or garden hose and blow out your drain...

  3. HVAC Tech.: Sounds like a seal around the base of the unit has failed. Or there could be a failure where the tubes go through the roof. Either way it should be a simple job to reseal around those openings and stop the rain water from seeping in. Good Luck!!
